Nominations

Any living individual who has had a major impact on the field of records and information management is eligible to be nominated. Nominations may be submitted by any individual, organization, or institution.  Nomination letters should be sent electronically to the Chair of the Leahy Award Committee (chair_leahy_committee@emmettleahyaward.org).

Nomination letters should succinctly (no more than two pages) and clearly identify the significant contributions the individual has made to the information and records management profession that meet the criteria for the Emmett Leahy Award. The Emmett Leahy Award Committee, which consists of the previous ten recipients and is solely responsible for the selection of Emmett Leahy Award recipients, will review nominations and invite nominees who meet the Award criteria to submit formal applications.

Applications

The Emmett Leahy Award Committee reviews nominations and selects individuals to invite to submit applications for the award.  Individuals invited to apply should submit applications following the guidance on content and format that follows.  In developing the application, the application should always keep in mind that the applicant has had a signficant impact on the records and information management field and that the application needs to make clear what the individual's specific role in bringing about the impacts identified.  The application should demonstrate the individual's impact in the following four areas:

  • Program Development and Management: Programs, projects and studies developed and implemented that have documented results (e.g., savings, new services, productivity improvement, management capabilities, etc.) The description should indicate if the applicant was individually responsible, was the leader of a team, or was a member of the team that was involved with bringing about the change.

  • Innovation: The design or development of new products, methodologies, concepts, and services or adaptation of existing ones that are original and fundamentally alter future developments in records and information management. The description should provide clear cut documentation of the results, impact, and/or successful implementation outcomes.

  • Education: Books and articles authored by the applicant, courses taught, lectures, and seminars presented and the audiences to which they are directed that demonstrate the applicant's original concepts, approaches or methodologies that significantly influence future developments in the field of records and information management.

  • Professional and Organizational Leadership: Unique contributions made to significantly advance professional or trade associations serving the records and information management profession. Validation of this contribution may include awards or certificates received and offices held that demonstrate the applicant's specific role in impacting that change.

More details

Part 1: Introductory Overview

Part 2: Detailed Accomplishment

Part 2: Detailed Accomplishment

The application should consist of an introductory narrative essay of no more that 1200 words, covering at a high level, the four areas listed above. The introduction should describe your contribution to the records and information management profession and how your contribution has had a major impact on both the profession and records and information management professionals.

Part 2: Detailed Accomplishment

Part 2: Detailed Accomplishment

Part 2: Detailed Accomplishment

This section should provide more detail on each of the criteria listed above, with particular emphasis on how you and your participation in these activities have made a difference to the profession of records and information management.

The Committee looks specifically at the IMPACT of the activities, not just generalized outcomes. For example, if a nominee is an author, how many copies of the publication have been sold and how is it being used? How has the idea that you developed resulted in changes to the profession? How is this impact measured? The Committee is looking for specific accomplishments rather than testimonials.
