Knowledge, Skill, and Experience
I am a Senior Consultant at Cohasset Associates and I work with public and private organizations to develop strategies and approaches to optimize the use of information technologies in the creation, use, and preservation of trustworthy digital information assets to satisfy legal, regulatory, and business/historical recordkeeping requirements. In working with such organizations I draw upon more than three decades of knowledge and experience in working with electronic records in a wide variety of organizations and technology environments.
I began my career as an historian at Oklahoma State University (1968-1974) where I was an early adopter of the use of computers in historical research [See Source1]. My interest in computerized historical records led to an invitation to join the staff of the National Archives and Records Administration (1974-1994) where I established the electronic records preservation program of the National Archives and subsequently became a thought leader in understanding the impact of information technologies on the capture and preservation of electronic records within the library, archives, and records management communities [See Source 2]. In 1994 I returned to academic life as an Associate Professor in the School of Library, Archives, and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia where I developed and taught ground-breaking graduate courses in electronic records management. I also became actively involved in the work of International Standards Organization (ISO) Technical Committee 171 to address the use of standards to mitigate the impact of technology obsolescence on digital information assets. [See Source 3]
In 1998 I joined Cohasset Associates as a Senior Consultant where I could share my academic, government, and standards experience with clients in both the public and private sectors [See Source 4)]. In addition, I continued his work in the field of international standards by serving as a member of the Association of Image and Information Management (AIIM) Standards Board from 2000-2004 and Chair (2004 – 2006). I also authored ISO 18492, Document Management Applications – Long-term preservation of electronic document-based information (2005) .
My current work focuses on implementing the ISO 15489 business function classification methodology (DIRKS) to support updated, simplified (“Big Buckets”) retention schedules [See Source 5] and adapting the Computer Software Capability Maturity Model to digital preservation and electronic records management [SeeSource 6].
